My first step on the Island of Great Britain; I was left at the
Coach Station on Portland Street, Manchester, 26st of September
2009, coming from Luton, where I arrived with the 407 flight from Budapest. My
originally starting point was Romania, which was warm and sunny when I left it.
The endless showers welcoming me on the new island, where annoying, but I was
determined to have an adventure. I was living in room 444, Cavendish Halls of
residence and my kitchen was lively and friendly from the moment I stepped in.
Everybody wanted to meet you, having their party hats on ready for some good
banter.
I had a check list
for my first year at Manchester Met: work hard, party hard ... emphasizing on
the latter one, at least for freshers week. In this respect Manchester is an
abundance of parties, pubs, clubs, raves, music festivals, art openings, live
performers, nice vibes, positive energy around many people from all
around the world. The city had everything for anybody. Oxford road in
Manchester can be described as the biggest cluster of students in Europe, thus
I was bound to find alike people.
On the other hand,
the curricular perspective seemed promising. Manchester Metropolitan University
has a good academic standard, intertwined around a multicultural diversity of
students and staff. The Philosophy course I was taking had a very welcoming and
exciting appearance. Each induction lecture was having a certain magic around
it making me and my class mates more and more enthusiastic. The tutors were
promising to take us on a journey through the history of knowledge, describing places
like ancient Greece. I felt ready to jump on the challenge of knowing
everything about everything. Furthermore, the Humanities Department has a wide
range of events and projects, encouraging students to get involved and be
creative in order to help build a better future. The networking opportunities
are amazing and I could not wait to relish each and every one of them. First
aims were to become a student ambassador, join the philosophy society and I
wanted to be a student representative for my course. I was promised a busy
schedule and that is what I came for.
If this was not enough to fill up my time, I was introduced to
fresher`s fair. The societies advertised were promising a good time, while
engaging with fellow students that are interested in the same topic. I picked
from the vast list the water polo team and the theatre society. Both are
extremely well organized and will give me the opportunity to enjoy two hobbies
that I appreciate a lot.
I will never forget my arrival in the UK, it represent a mile stone in my past. Since that first impulse it was hard, even if on tried, to lose enthusiasm. I made best friends, I met the most awesome people, in one of the biggest cities in the world and this is something that I will tell my grandchildren.
Very good. Continue, please.
